Volunteer Spotlight — Y. Albert Moore
How long have you volunteered with MCVLP?
Until the formal establishment of the Madison County Volunteer Lawyers Program, my pro bono work mostly involved board memberships and church-related matters. I have been loosely involved with the MCVLP since its inception.
Why do you volunteer?
The Madison County Volunteer Lawyers Program reminds me of my obligation to facilitate access to justice to those who are excluded by existing systems. Without that reminder, I could easily become wrapped up in my “busy-ness” and forget the head start I have been provided in this world.
What is your most memorable volunteering experience?
A screening clinic for eligibility for MCVLP services held at the Downtown Rescue Mission was an especially eye opening and memorable volunteer experience.
What advice can you give attorneys thinking about volunteering with the MCVLP?
The words we use every day are foreign to so many of the clients referred to me by MCVLP-often they only need a kind interpreter to remove the fright and anxiety from their situation. Typically they’ve been given the run around in their self-help efforts because they can’t articulate what they are trying to achieve or respond with the appropriate answers and documentation. Many times I’ve readily been able to provide the information necessary to resolve their legal issue without an excessive amount of time. I’ve never had an unappreciative MCVLP client.
