How long have you volunteered?

I have volunteered for the MCVLP for five years. I met with my first pro bono client in February 2009.

Why do you volunteer?

I volunteer because helping people in need is very important to me. I have been helped by family, friends, and complete strangers throughout my life in many ways. I am grateful for the kindness of others and hope that my appreciation shows by helping others when and where I can with any of the skills and abilities I possess.

What is your most memorable volunteering experience?

My most memorable volunteering experience is a case I had a few years back with a gentleman that needed to file bankruptcy. He was a very prideful man that did not want to file bankruptcy, but even more so did not want to be a burden to his grown children. After his case was closed he came by our office to pick up his documents, and I remember he gave me the biggest hug and told me that although I looked like a kid I really helped him at a time when he didn’t think anyone in the world could do so. I realized then that this man had put his faith in me and found me worthy of his admiration. It was the best feeling in the world.

What advice can you give attorneys thinking about volunteering with the MCVLP?

I would advise attorneys thinking of volunteering with the MCVLP to stop thinking and just do it. There is no greater reward than knowing that you are using your skills and wisdom to help others in need.
